Oulu, Finland
Capital of Northern Scandinavia
There are no larger cities (outside of Russia) that are more northerly than Oulu which has over 190,000 inhabitants. It is considered one of Europe's "living labs", where residents experiment with new technology (such as NFC tags and ubi-screens) at a community-wide scale. The Oulu Region is well known for its technology, the hi-tech growth having started after the establishment of Oulu University. There are two science parks in the region: Technopolis Plc, Scandinavia's first science park, and Medipolis Ltd., as well as a technology centre, Ii Micropolis Ltd. The region is home to many hi-tech companies, such as Nokia, and the sector currently employs over 10,000 people.
Conference Venue
Lasaretti
The Conference Centre Lasaretti serves as a venue for the IPTA 2016. Lasaretti offers tranquil and unique settings for venues and is located by the Oulu River – still only 1 km from the Centre of Oulu hidden in the park area. It is located on the Lasaretinsaari Island. The dam across the Oulu River is located right in front of the Lasaretinsaari Island, which means that the hotel's windows give out straight onto the water. Lasaretti is one of the first hotels in Finland that measures its climate effect by measuring their carbon footprint and is commited to sustainable development. In some languages the name Lasaretti reveals the past activity on the island and refers to its history.
